About Resilience to Shocks

About the Project

The Resilience to Shocks Smart Solution, developed by Tecnalia, is an online crowdsensing platform for infrastructure health monitoring, tailored to address the current challenges of the Durangaldea area in Spain and Kythira in Greece. This platform ensures the safety of critical infrastructure, particularly bridges in rural settings. By integrating low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) accelerometers on vehicles with additional accelerometers on infrastructure (but the platform and part of the methodology could be applied in the future adding other types of direct measurement sensors) and weather station data, it offers a comprehensive, cost-effective method for assessing bridge conditions.

The SS is designed to assess bridges before, during, and after climatic or natural shocks, using a combination of indirect anomaly detection through vehicle sensors and direct damage detection via strategically placed sensors. The innovative points are the use of indirect drive-by monitoring, Artificial Intelligence techniques and low-cost IoT sensors, making it a solution with potential for deployment in rural areas with limited budgets and problems of access to power outlets in the vicinity of the assets to rely on standard instrumentation and analysis techniques.

Use Cases

Bridge Monitoring in Kythira

The Kythira use case focuses on enhancing the resilience of key infrastructure, particularly bridges, in a rural setting prone to seismic activity and extreme weather conditions. The island’s infrastructure is vulnerable to shocks such as earthquakes, heavy rainfall, and floods, which can compromise both structural integrity and transportation networks. In particular, the pilot case selected to test the Resilience to Shocks Smart Solution, which employs IoT accelerometers on vehicles along with strategically placed accelerometers on the infrastructure itself, is the Diakofti Bridge, an iconic structure on the island that provides access to vehicles from ferries arriving on the island, and also located in an aggressive marine environment (close to the port). This approach is an inexpensive and digital tool to contribute to the early detection of anomalies and damage, ensuring swift responses to potential risks, and promoting the long-term safety and sustainability of this critical transport route on the island, also establishing a methodology potentially replicable after the end of the project to other existing bridges or new structures with the collaboration of citizens or inspection vehicles regarding the collection of future indirect measurement data.

Vehicle-Based Monitoring in Durangaldea

The Durangaldea use case focuses on the monitoring of a critical transportation node for this rural area consisting of a 3-span concrete road bridge with high piers, located on a main road essential for regional connectivity. The bridge is particularly vulnerable to environmental risks, such as heavy rainfall and slope instability, with the area beneath the piers exposed to torrential watercourses and debris flow. The Resilience to Shocks Smart Solution addresses these challenges by employing a combination of IoT accelerometers installed on vehicles and fixed accelerometers on the bridge to monitor its structural health. This approach enables real-time monitoring of the bridge's condition before, during, and after climatic events, ensuring rapid response and improving the overall safety and resilience of the infrastructure.
